In the North-East of Italy lies the shrine town of Palladio’s architecture: Vicenza. A crown to the undulate landscape and scenic beauty of the Berici Hills (“Colli Berici” in Italian) – surrounded by Venetia’s combination of art, history, heritage and winemakers‘ skills. In a tiny village called Castegnero of the Colli Berici, Marco Costalunga purchased the Villa Maffei property in 1957 and grounded the farm that would give Costalunga Winery a home.
Costalunga family winemaking heritage continued with three of Marco’s sons from the 1960’s to the 1990’s. Since the millennium turn, regular investments have been made to modernize the winery and vineyards. Modern technology such as stainless steel fermentation was introduced and new international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah and Chardonnay were added: third-generation winegrower (with a degree in Agriculture and Enology) directs the operation of the vineyards and winery, continuing the family tradition of producing exclusively estate-grown wines. He is resolute in his pursuit of perfection when it comes to crafting fine Colli Berici wines: cherry-red “Tai Rosso” and crispy flavored white “Garganego” – labeled “Ego”- local vines crafted into fine varietal wines with a distinct sense of place that reflect two specially favoured vineyards on the Colli Berici’s hillside.
The family name is on the wine labels; the path to quality in production decisions is crucial, because family name and reputation is at stake.
The 37 acres property hosts a villa that was originally built in the 16th century and a small chapel stemming from the 17th century. The villa is undecorated and its external structure is the most interesting feature. The northern facade is adorned with a colonnade of eight incised columns in yellow Nanto stone and a central arch over two ionic order columns. The villa is a private home, just a plain country house, and is not open to visits. Adjacent to the villa our guests are welcomed to visit the small 17th century’s chapel with a baroque stone altar carrying a fine statue of the assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven.
Booking in advance we arrange wine tasting and connect with the community’s food producers.
All year round you can walk in the vineyards and experience firsthand how vines are grown and in september how on-farm produced grapes are transformed into wine.

“Raixe Grixe” refers to roots, many types of roots.
To those of my family, for example, but also to those of the villa itself where the company is based, as those who started its construction in the 16th century, the Maffei, were probably Venetian lords.
During the guided tour I will therefore talk to you about roots understood as the story that led my great-grandfather Marco to move here to start a business that later generations have developed and made to evolve; but I will also tell you about roots understood in a more literal way, that is the actual plants we take care of, which for the most part are vineyards and which we cultivate with passion to produce wines whose various vintages see important prizes and awards recognized;
I will show you the spaces and tell you about the processes that make our wine so precious and if the weather conditions permit, I will also entertain you with a short walk among the rows. I will also tell you about the “stone” roots of our company, i.e. the rural buildings that make it up and which over the centuries have contributed to the sustenance and expansion of the villa, and after visiting these from the outside we will go on to visit the inside the noble chapel, to then move to the space dedicated to tasting and discover yet another type of “roots”, namely the culinary ones.
In fact, I will offer you 4 selected labels paired with sopressa, pan biscuit and Asiago cheese, which are typical local products that are an integral part of the history of our territory.

We will welcome you to the Cellar to start the guided tour with a short narration on the origins and evolutions that our company has lived – and still lives – over the course of four generations, to then accompany you on a tour of the spaces dedicated to production, illustrating some of the processes work that guarantee the quality of our wines, in which we carefully infuse ancient knowledge and modern innovations.
We will continue with an indispensable external visit of the rural buildings and the villa to tell you about the peculiarities that characterize them making them unique and we will stop to admire the interiors with the simple and graceful lines of the noble chapel.
If weather conditions permit, we will also enjoy a short walk in the educational vineyard.
We will then conclude with the tasting of 4 excellent labels that we have selected especially for you, accompanied by biscuit bread.
