Amarone della Valpolicella is a DOCG reserved for a dry red passito wine whose production is permitted in the province of Verona.
The name derives from the word “amaro”, adopted to distinguish it from Recioto della Valpolicella which is a dessert wine. Amarone was born almost by chance, by mistake one might say. An involuntary error that occurred during the production of Recioto.
Like all Valpolicella wines produced from Corvina and Rondinella grapes, Amarone has strong fruity aromas, especially within the first 10 years. Characteristic notes are cherry, black cherry, currant, blackberry, plum often in the form of dried fruit, in alcohol or in jam.
The minimum alcohol content must not be less than 14 degrees, but older products reach up to 17 degrees. The maximum residual sugar allowed must not exceed 12 grams per liter for an alcohol content of 14 degrees.
